GOLF SUSTAINABILITY DAY 2024

Sustainability was at the core of The KPMG Women’s Irish Open at Carton House, a Fairmont Managed Hotel.   

Sustainability was a huge priority at the 2024 event and the initiatives put in place proved to be very successful.  

The KPMG women’s Irish Open had a Re-Turn scheme in place which allowed spectators to return their used plastic bottles with the opportunity to donate to two charities, Breast Cancer Research Ireland and Special Olympics Ireland. The event was the first sporting event in Ireland to have this scheme in place and it proved to be a success.  

The event also included a full waste management system around the course which allowed spectators, volunteers and players to dispose of their waste into correct bins by separating their recycling from general waste. When setting up the course, the organisers ensured that natural habitats were protected, there was a reduced requirement for mobile generators and all spectators were encouraged to carpool to reduce emissions. The event also reuses signage from previous years, and stores them safely where they are protected from damage to be used in 2025. 

BMW also activated their own sustainability efforts, by partnering with Picker Pals, a programme for 6-9 year olds focused on environmental stewardship, learning and fun. Throughout the event they encouraged recycling to the young attendees by teaching through fun games and challenges. 

Waste Management, Energy Management, Reducing Green House Gas emissions relating to the tournament were the main initiatives taken on at this year's event so that the event could be as sustainable as possible. The tournament followed the guidelines outlined in the International Sustainability Standard ISO 20121. 

These initiatives helped to make the event as sustainable as possible, and we will continue to improve this year on year to reduce our carbon footprint and make sure that we are running our events in the most sustainable manner.
